During the LearningSpace 2014 spring release the placard software solution was introduced. The room placard is a tool that displays signage outside LearningSpace managed rooms. The signage will display details regarding a currently running event for the given room, the names of learners scheduled, case information including a detailed case description, and an indication of video recording in room.
The placard displays information automatically based on the LearningSpace scheduled information. The system will fill in the following areas automatically when scheduled.
- Scheduled event name
- Upcoming learner schedule
- Case identifier and presenting complaint
- Case description information
- Room name
- Recording status
How to setup a placard display device:
The placard display will require an internet enabled device such as laptop, desktop or tablet. Check out hot to build you own placard. SimMaker Advanced shows you to create a placard. A wired network connection is recommended dedicated be provided for the device that will be used as the placard display.
How to setup a placard display software:
Login into the placard device as a LearningSpace administrator.
Navigate to System tab and then select Stations.
Add the device as an Additional Station
Navigate to System > Rooms
Add the station to a room as an Additional Station
Setting up the content for display:
There are some items that need to be completed for the placard to work successfully. In order for the placard to work as designed you must fully prepare the user groups, event, schedule the learners and prepare the case description. The one item that seems slightly problematic is the requirement for a schedule learner in order to complete the placard display. If the learner is not scheduled, then the display will remain blank as if there was no event scheduled in the room. The learner requirement is standard for OSCE events and scheduled Simulated Clinical Experiences but for less formal training exercises or labs the current learner requirement may not be beneficial for this workflow.
When using LearningSpace as a simulation center management tool the placard can be a valuable tool for room scheduling and communication. In my experiences it would be advantageous to utilize the placard tool to display all room usages and not limiting the placard to the events with scheduled learners. It is currently problematic to schedule a group of learners for a room for these less formal training experiences. For example when there is a lab for a group of 8 to 32 students the group would usually have a name. It would be good to provide a method to identify a group of user for the placard display but some might argue this could included in the event name if it was easy enough to create from Event manager. We can only hope with the possible redevelopment of Event Manager and Schedule Manager that there is a method to apply groups to a schedule.
Suggestions for improvements:
Allow display of room event and case information when a learner is not scheduled.
Allow display of Running Non-schedule Events on the placard display for simulation promotion and donor recognition.
Allow image insertion into Case Description field or allow an optional location to add a image to the screen.

LearningSpace’s implementation of placard display provides a valuable communication to the learners and facilitators but there are some items that could use some improvements.
but we must always consider the setup and configuration required to utilize the communication tool.
